IRS, BBB and SSA Help Local Community Understand How to Avoid Becoming Victims of Identity Theft and Other Scams –  Especially Considering CA Wildfires

For the second year, the Internal Revenue Service announces National Tax Security Awareness Week, November 27- December 1, 2017 to remind both individual and business taxpayers about the crucial role they play in protecting their data and identities and to take additional steps now to protect themselves from becoming a victim.

November 29, 2017 the IRS partners with the BBB and SSA to share vital messages during a press conference and event for the local community to provide information on why they should be aware of ID theft scams and schemes; how they can protect themselves; and what to do if they discover one or become a victim. Now is a critical time with ID theft and scams peaking after disasters, including the CA Wildfires, and as the holidays approach.

Reporters who would like to attend the Santa Rosa area press conference should register by contacting Raphael Tulino, IRS Media Relations Specialist at Raphael.D.Tulino@irs.gov or at 619-615-9500.

Increasing public awareness about people’s role in protecting their identity and data is a critical part of the Security Summit efforts. Partners launched the “Taxes. Security. Together” awareness campaign in the fall of 2015.
